Where Macon Jail Releases Go
The Macon County Jail is the county adult detention component of the Justice Center and is operated by the Macon County Sheriff’s Office. It holds people arrested locally, people awaiting court action, and people serving sentences or subject to holds within the Sheriff’s authority. A person can leave on bond or recognizance, after time served, through dismissal, at sentence completion, or under another court-authorized release. Probation may begin or resume when confinement ends.
Other exits are transfers. A person can move to the Tennessee Department of Correction, another county jail, federal custody, or ICE. In that event, the Macon County Jail truthfully records an exit from its custody, but the person did not necessarily return to the community. Ask for the release disposition and receiving agency. General words such as “released” or a blank roster result do not supply the destination.

Confirm a Macon Jail Release
No official Macon County web roster, 24-hour release feed, 72-hour release feed, or released-person archive was found. An unofficial recent-booking page records entry, not departure. Its disappearance or stale photo cannot verify release. Begin with the official Sheriff page, which gives the jail contact. Then request the existing record for a named booking or exact interval.
- Collect the full booked name, approximate booking date, charge, case number, and booking number if known.
- Call the Sheriff and ask whether the person is presently held. If not, ask whether the event was community release or transfer.
- Request the booking sheet and release-log entry, including actual release time, reason, and receiving agency or destination.

- Follow the stated destination in TDOC FOIL, another jail, the federal court/BOP route, or ICE ODLS.

The Sheriff’s official page does not publish a dedicated records form, public-records email, named coordinator, fee schedule, hours, or guaranteed turnaround. A focused request is more useful than asking for every record about a person.

Ask for the existing booking sheet and release entry tied to the person and date. Useful fields include booked name, booking number, booking date and time, arresting agency, charges, case number, release date and time, release reason, releasing authority, and destination. If the exit was a transfer, the receiving agency matters. If a local intake image is needed, request the booking photograph associated with that booking. A TDOC photograph is a different record.
Under Tennessee Code section 10-7-503, a custodian who cannot promptly provide access generally must respond within seven business days by producing the record, giving a legal basis for denial, explaining the reasonable time needed, or seeking clarification. This is a response framework, not a promise of completion. Ask for a cost estimate before copies. Confidential, juvenile, expunged, medical, victim, or security-sensitive details may be withheld or redacted under section 10-7-504 and other laws.
Macon Jail Orders Next Door
The Sheriff and court offices are next door in the Justice Center complex. The jail is listed at 902 Highway 52 Bypass East. The courts are at 904. This makes an in-person two-record check compact, but the records remain under different custodians. The Sheriff controls the booking and release entry. The Circuit Court Clerk controls the bond order, disposition, judgment, sentence, and probation or discharge documents.
General Sessions handles misdemeanors and felony preliminary proceedings. A felony can later move to Circuit Criminal Court. Search both divisions in the free local TnCIS portal. A docket may show bond modification, dismissal, time-served credit, a suspended sentence, split confinement, probation, or revocation. It can explain why release was authorized. It may not identify the exact moment the jail completed physical discharge.

About Macon County Jail Custody
The official record supports describing this location as a county adult detention facility run by Sheriff Joey Wilburn’s office. It does not support publishing a fixed bed count, release-processing schedule, exit door, family waiting area, property-return policy, weekend routine, transport practice, bond payment method, or local bond schedule. A secondary source mentions a capacity and another phone number, but those details were not verified through an official source and are not used here.
These unknowns matter at release time. Families should call before traveling or waiting at the complex. A court order can precede the physical release while staff process paperwork, another hold, or transport. No sourced Macon policy establishes how long that takes. Track Macon Jail Transfers
A TDOC destination sends the search to Felony Offender Information Lookup. FOIL covers current and former Tennessee felony offenders in custody or supervision. Search by TDOC ID or SID when possible, or use name fields and compare the photo, demographics, offense, location, and status. A parole or probation status shows physical release under that state record with supervision still active. An eligibility date is not proof of actual release.
A federal defendant can be held in local space for the U.S. Marshals Service. In that situation, physical presence at the Macon County Jail does not make the case a county prosecution. Use the federal docket and the holding agency for pretrial release. The BOP locator becomes useful only after a person enters the federal prison system. A past BOP release date confirms the end of BOP custody, not the end of federal supervised release or another hold.
For ICE, use the destination in the jail record before searching the Online Detainee Locator System. ODLS is for present ICE or longer-term CBP custody and is not a durable release history. A not-found result can reflect release, removal, transfer, data lag, wrong biographical data, brief CBP custody, or an age limit. It cannot stand alone as proof.
Can Macon Release Mean ICE?
Yes. Tennessee’s Centralized Immigration Enforcement Division lists Macon County among the state’s current 287(g)-participating counties. That makes the destination field in a county release record especially important. The participation listing does not establish that every booking receives the same process, nor does it document the exact local operating model. It supports a careful question: did county custody end in a community release or an ICE handoff?
ICE explains an immigration detainer as a request that a facility hold a person for up to 48 hours past the time they would otherwise be released so the Department of Homeland Security can assume custody. The Macon jail record may therefore show a local release while confinement continues federally. Ask the Sheriff for the destination.
