Macon County Federal Custody Boundaries
No federal prison was found in Macon County. Federal pretrial custody is administered by the U.S. Marshals Service, which can rent state or local detention space. A person can therefore be physically held at a Tennessee county jail while remaining a federal prisoner. The federal case, commitment, and USMS status control that custody, not the fact that a county building supplied the bed.
USMS responsibility generally begins after a federal court commits the defendant and continues until acquittal or another release, or until conviction and delivery to BOP. A person may never enter BOP. That is why the BOP locator cannot be treated as the first or only source for every federal defendant with a Macon link. The federal court order and holding agency are central before BOP entry.
| Federal stage | Correct release source |
|---|---|
| Federal pretrial or USMS custody | Federal docket, release order, relevant USMS district, and holding agency |
| Movement toward BOP | USMS and court first; BOP once a locator record exists |
| BOP imprisonment | BOP inmate locator, judgment, and BOP records |
| Past BOP release | Past locator date and released status, plus the judgment for supervision |
| Immigration handoff | County or federal destination record and ICE ODLS for present custody |
Confirm Macon Federal Pretrial Release
The U.S. Marshals Service has no public historical person locator comparable to BOP. Its Justice Detainee Information System is internal. The public reading-room description explains the system but does not provide a name search. A missing BOP result therefore does not prove that a federal defendant was never in custody or has been released.
- Identify the federal court case and the person’s full legal name.
- Read the docket for a detention, bond, dismissal, acquittal, sentence, or release order.
- Identify the holding facility and relevant USMS district from the available court or custody record.
- Ask the holding agency whether the person remains there and which agency received custody if transferred.
- If the person was delivered to BOP, continue with the BOP locator.
- For eligible USMS records not publicly available, use the USMS FOIA route.
A signed release or bond order explains legal authority. It may not be the exact physical departure time. Transportation, processing, or another hold can intervene. When a local Macon record is involved, ask Sheriff Joey Wilburn’s office whether the person was held under federal authority and whether the existing exit record identifies USMS or another destination. Do not treat a county roster change as federal release proof.
Search Macon BOP Release Records
The BOP inmate locator searches by register number in the format shown by BOP or by name. Name results can be narrowed by race, age, and sex. Exact spelling matters. A register number is more precise than a name and should be used when known.
- Choose the register-number route when the federal identifier is available.
- Otherwise enter the name and use age, race, and sex to narrow the results.
- Match the name, register number, age, race, and sex before reading the status.
- Read release date and location together.
- Open the BOP definitions when a location reads unknown, in transit, community corrections, or a regional office.
- Use the federal judgment to confirm the legal result and any supervised-release term.
The locator updates daily and principally covers federal inmates released after 1982. A no-result can reflect spelling, missing or mismatched data, pre-1982 release, or the fact that the person never entered BOP. BOP notes that its records can include people who did not ultimately serve a federal prison sentence, including some dismissed pretrial defendants or material witnesses. A result must be read in context.
Note: BOP is the correct locator only after a person enters its system; it is not a complete USMS pretrial custody database.
Read Macon Federal Release Results
A BOP result can list name, register number, age, race, sex, release date, and location. Read the last two together. A past release date paired with no facility or a released result means BOP custody ended. It does not establish the end of federal supervised release, parole, state custody, immigration custody, or another case.
| BOP display | Meaning and limit |
|---|---|
| Past release date and released | BOP custody ended on the reported date; other supervision or custody may remain. |
| Future release date | A projected BOP calculation that can change. |
| UNKNOWN | The confinement term is undetermined, which can include pretrial, unsentenced, or civil commitment. |
| IN TRANSIT | Movement from a BOP facility, not a promise of later return or community release. |
| Community corrections or CCM | May identify halfway-house or related placement within a BOP status distinction. |
| Regional office | Can reflect a concurrent state sentence rather than release. |
The official BOP locator definitions provide the context shown in the captured source.

Those definitions prevent labels such as in transit or community corrections from being mistaken for a completed release.
Macon Federal Custody Record Requests
Federal custody records are split among custodians. The federal court owns its docket, orders, judgment, and supervised-release sentence. USMS owns eligible records from its pretrial and transport role. BOP owns its prison custody records. The local holding agency can hold the physical admission and exit record for a stay in rented space. Ask each office for the record it created rather than sending one broad request to every agency.
BOP inmate status: public inmate locator
BOP records beyond the locator: BOP FOIA
USMS pretrial or transport records: USMS FOIA
Legal release authority: federal court docket and order
No federal prison or public USMS locator is based in Macon County.
The BOP FOIA page is the federal prison-record fallback and references the required identity and request process, including DOJ-361 where applicable. The USMS FOIA page is the separate route for eligible Marshals records. A focused request identifies the person, register or case number, approximate dates, facility or district, and the specific record sought.
A Macon Sheriff booking or release record does not replace the federal order. It can establish the local physical custody episode and the destination recorded when the person left the facility. Conversely, a federal order does not always provide the local door time. Read both when the person occupied county space under federal authority.
Macon Federal and ICE Transfers
Macon County appears on Tennessee’s current 287(g)-participation list. That makes the destination field important whenever a county jail exit may involve ICE. A release to an ICE detainer is an interagency handoff, not a return to the community. ICE says a detainer asks the local agency to hold a person for up to 48 hours past ordinary release so DHS can assume custody.
ICE ODLS is designed for present ICE custody or longer-term CBP custody, not as a durable release archive. A not-found result can have several causes, including release, removal, transfer, a data lag, incorrect personal details, a short CBP stay, or the age restriction. It cannot by itself prove release. Ask the local or federal custodian for the destination first, then use ODLS if ICE received the person.
This pathway must also remain separate from BOP. A former BOP prisoner can be transferred to ICE, state custody, or another hold. The BOP release date is still accurate as the end of BOP custody, but it does not describe the later system. Follow the receiving record until the question is resolved.
No Federal Prison in Macon
No federal prison or separately documented federal detention facility was found in Macon County. A local physical location should never be used to infer that the case is county rather than federal. Identify the committing authority and case first. USMS may use contracted local space, while BOP manages people who enter its federal prison system.
The correct route depends on that distinction. Use the Macon Sheriff for a local custody record, the federal court and USMS for a federal pretrial release, and BOP for a person who entered BOP custody. The broader Macon County released-inmate records path helps trace the handoff when the starting agency is uncertain.
